Visits to THE GYM

Since my last post I have been to THE GYM twice - 19th May & 23rd May. I have had a go on the running machine. You know, for someone who is not very coordinated that takes a little bit of getting used to but once I got started I was fine. I have been doing some pilates exercises but did find this was challenging with my "stiff neck ". Last night, 23 May, Jasmine worked me quite hard but I think that there is probably worse to come!! The gym was really busy last night but I think that the trick is be quite focused on what I am doing & not bother about how fit everyone else appears to be. I will be pleased to have my arm checked on Friday as it is quite sore still although I am sure it is nothing serious.

Jasmine has also asked me to keep a diary about what I am eating & drinking. This will be quite good for me too & might stop me from buying the odd chocolate bar to eat perhaps!

Progress with my Personal Trainer!!

I have to say that it sounds very pretentious talking about "My Personal Trainer" doesn't it? However, it is quite enjoyable to have someone who is taking an interest in me & my health & well-being! It's "All About Me" for a change. I might get a T-shirt with that printed on it.

Last week, Thursday 12th May, I underwent fitness testing (InBody) and Jasmine measured some of my 'wobbly bits' with some sort of caliper; "body composition and dimension assessment", measuring height, weight (hmm, that was not a good thing to do!) skinfolds and/or girths. I did a Cardiorespiratory fitness assessment (gotta get the jargon right!). This was a measure of how well my heart, lungs and blood vessels can cope with the challenge of exercise. This test involved 9-16 minutes of submaximal (low to moderate) intensity exercise on a stationary bike.

On Monday, I went to THE GYM! I never thought I would ever say that. But I did. I had to register, get my photo taken & then change into suitable clothing (NOT lycra!). My PT, Jasmine, firstly got me to have a go on a Cross Trainer machine. I stepped onto it very awkwardly & my feet started into some sort of rhythm but my arms wouldn't co-ordinate. I told Jasmine that I felt as though I was going backwards! She laughed & said, "that's because you are!!" No coordination obviously. So, once I started going forwards it wasn't so bad.

Jasmine then progressed me through various pilates-type exercises which I managed reasonably well. My right arm is very sore so have found that it is restricting me somewhat. I need to have this seen to again so that I don't aggravate what ever is wrong with it.

So, first visit to a gym went well & am happy to go again. Next visit today, 19th May.

Personal Trainer!

Recently I received an email from a Programme Manager at the Otago Institute of Sport & Adventure at Otago Polytechnic with an invitation to think about engaging the support of a Year 2 Personal Training Student to help me "battle the fitness, body and mood changes that accompany Hibernation!"

The deal is that I would need to meet with my assigned Personal Training Student, undergo some relevant fitness testing and join the World Fitness Centre (at a cost!)

I don't do gyms! and I especially don't do lycra!

However, after reading the email I selected Reply & yesterday I met with my very own PT, Jasmine. Jasmine needed information from me about my current exercise programme (oops), health status as well as my goals or intentions for wanting to participate in this programme.

My main goals would be around health & well being, motivation to actually be more active and, of course, weight loss!

I will be having a fitness test later this week - & that will be interesting, won't it?
